From the Rector commentary

Please note that beginning this month we will be sending the Chimes by email only to those who have indicated that preference. Thank you to all who responded so enthusiastically about receiving the E - mail PDF version of the Chimes, or sent us your new or updated email address!

You can always change to “email only” – just let us know your preference by emailing the Rector therector@stmarysburlington.org or the Parish Office parishoffice@stmarysburlington.org If you use email and haven’t heard anything from us lately, please send us a message with your current address. Of course, if you use email and would like both printed and emailed versions you can indicate that too! For everyone else the print version will still be sent via postal mail as always.

News and Notices

BLOOD DRIVE EXCEEDED GOAL: We had a very successful blood drive this time. Our goal was 30 productive pints. 39 people presented themselves at the drive including some called by the Red Cross and a few walk-ins. 34 pints of blood were collected – 113% of our goal. Thanks are due to those in the parish who made calls and of course to those who donated their much needed blood. – Bob Mead

Ladle of Love is now a member of the New Jersey Food Bank—we made our first visit to the warehouse in Pennsauken on Tuesday.

Through this program we will be able to get canned goods, paper supplies, meat, dairy products and fresh vegetables.

These will be used in the preparation for our meals.

The Food Bank collects surplus food from large distributors and makes it available to organizations such as ours who minister to the hungry. We can go to the warehouse once a week and pick up what we want, or order ahead of time and have it delivered to the satellite distribution points right here in Burlington on the fourth Thursday of the month. Everything comes in case lots so if there are any male volunteers to help with loading and unloading just let us know.

Our crowds on Wednesday continue to grow as word spreads. One gentleman this week said we have one of the best soup kitchens around not only because the food is always so good and so plentiful, but because we never rush people in and out and everyone is always so friendly and welcoming.

Thanks all you volunteers who make this work. People do appreciate it.

6TH ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC: Our 6th Annual Parish Picnic will take place on Wednesday, August 10th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Masonic Home Picnic grounds. There are sign up sheets for attendance and contributions available on Sundays.  Guests are welcome! Volunteers are needed for transporting, setting up, and clean up. Questions or comments to Irene and/or Jerry Gares (609) 877-1740 or GMGIBG@comcast.net. Be sure to mark your calendars now so you don’t miss the fun event.

BURIAL LOT INCREASE:  The cost of burial lots in our Churchyard will rise to $500.00 effective September 1st, 2005.  This price is still below the average cost of burial lots charged by other area cemeteries.  Burial lots may be purchased by parishioners at the current cost of $400.00, but must be paid for in full not later than September 1st.  Please speak to the Rector or Dave Parker if you are interested.

MEN OF ST. MARY’S will not meet in July or August. Our next meeting date will be on September 10th.

FORWARD DAY BY DAY for August - October is available on the tract table or in the Parish Office. Many have found this daily devotional booklet valuable in their spiritual journey; this might be a good time for you to try Forward. A 75¢ donation is requested.

News from the Episcopal Church Women (ECW)

SPAGHETTI DINNER: Please mark September 17th on your calendar for our annual Spaghetti Dinner. Watch for notices in the Sunday bulletin and for sign up sheets.

2005 CHRISMAS BAZAAR:

CRAFT NIGHTS - Barbara Quinn will again be hosting Craft Nights at her home. These crafts are sold each year at our Christmas Bazaar held in November. Barbara has many craft ideas and supplies so what we need is your hands. You don't need to be an expert craft person, just a willing participant. Join us any Thursday evening right up to the Bazaar at Barbara and Steve's house in Burlington Township. If you need directions, call Barbara at 609-386-5129 . If you can't join us but still want to participate there are other options: do your own thing and donate it to the table or ask Barbara for a craft you can work on at home.

Christmas Bazaar . . . continued:

Save the dates - This year's Bazaar will be held on Friday, November 18th and Saturday, November 19th. Holiday Crafts, Baked Goods, Candy, Auctions, Raffles, Jewelry, Books and more make up the main event, along with a soup and sandwich luncheon on Friday and, on Saturday, our premier dinner event - the Annual Home-style Roast Beef Supper with seatings at 5 and 6:30.

Curriculum and materials need to be ordered and class space held for each child entering the 2005-2006 school year. If your child is currently enrolled you need not call.

REGISTRATION FORMS FOR STUDENTS will be mailed to each family. Please be sure to fill it out and return it to your child’s Church School teacher on September 11th. Each child must have a Registration Form on file in the Parish Office.

CHURCH SCHOOL OPENING DAY is September 11th. Parents are expected to participate in an introductory session during Coffee Hour that day— remember that parents are integral to nurturing children in Christian living! Official Business Notices

WE REGRET to note the death of Kenneth Phillips on August 1st. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

WHATS NEW AT OLD ST. MARY’S: Perhaps you noticed some new additions and some spiffing up recently at the Old Church…newly painted trim on the outside and some wonderful additions to the interior, shutters installed over last winter and beautiful valances hung in the Eyre Memorial Room and Sacristy. The valance project was undertaken by the ECW with help from many others along the way. Thanks especially to Louise Cherubini, Edna Haney, Joyce Hannisch and Mary Birkett for their meticulous work in designing and sewing the valances. Bravo to Fred Thum for designing and manufacturing the valance rods and to Cliff Frake and Steve Quinn for installing the rods and hanging the valances. Thanks to the ECW and all the women of the parish for the funding that made the project a reality. A tremendous amount of work went into this project and what makes it all the more rewarding is that is was accomplished by a group of talented parishioners!

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS: Remember that during the Summer (through Labor Day), the Parish Office will be open from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“THE VESTRY DIGEST”

The first two months of the Vestry Digest tried to inform you of how the Vestry operates. For the next few months we will share with you how you can help the Vestry in different aspects of parish life.

A parish like St. Mary’s is blessed by the generosity of its parishioners not only to give of their financial resources but also of their hard work, talent and skill. Our needs are everywhere and many times as soon as a need presents itself or is known, someone from the parish is willing to help fulfill that need. Those things are not always visible and sometimes done so quietly that they can’t be acknowledged but they occur everyday and we are truly thankful for them. Look around you, talk to the Rector and your fellow parishioners, and ask how you can help. Each of us is a steward of God's creation. All that we have has been given as a blessing from God;all that we return to God truly makes us doubly blessed.

We hope you find this digest helpful. If you have comments about the digest or its contents, feel free to contact the Rector, the Wardens or any member of the Vestry. For the Vestry, Barbara Frake, Clerk.

At its July meeting, the Vestry,

• Received a report from the Executive Committee on the signing of the contract with Print Crete, Inc. of Medford, NJ for a new parking lot that will be located directly behind the Guild House. The new parking lot will provide 33 parking spots including 3 handicapped spots. The entrance to the parking lot will be from Talbot Street. It will feature an asphalt surface, Belgian block curbing and additional lighting with fixtures to match the remainder of the Churchyard. The rear steps to the Guild House will be rebuilt and made handicap accessible. Construction will begin within the next several weeks with completion expected by early October. Don Hawkey, a parishioner, will act as St. Mary’s volunteer project manager and will consult with the Rector and Vestry as necessary during the project.

  • Received a report from the Finance committee determining the best option for funding of the parking lot capital project. The project will be “self financed” from existing invested funds. As new funds become available for investment they will then be paid back into the investment accounts.
  • Acknowledged the following people for their volunteer service and donations to the parish:
  • Fred Thum for painting the Rectory Shutters.
  • David Gardellin for painting the refurbished Rectory Doors.
  • Pauline and Donald Wood for replacing the air conditioning unit in the Archive Room.
  • Fred and Barbara Thum for providing blueprint cabinets to the Archive Room and a new coffee pot for the kitchen.
  • Steve Quinn, Don and Pauline Wood for work in preparing the room, removing old desks and equipment and installing the new blueprint cabinets in the Archive Room.
  • Cynthia and Fred McFarland for their donation of a large Sony monitor for the Parish office.

The Chimes is published on a monthly schedule.  Items for inclusion in the next issue should be submitted in writing by August 28th.
