History

The land where the Guild House was built was presented to the church by John Talbot, first rector of St. Mary’s in 1724. The brick house was erected in 1799. The first occupant was Dr. Charles Henry Wharton, who served as rector from 1796 to his death in 1833.

His successor, Bishop George Washington Doane lived there until 1838 when he moved to “Riverside”, a 25 room Italian-Gothic mansion designed by renowned architect John Notman, that stood along the banks of the Delaware River from 1838 until 1961.

The Guild House became the home of the Missionary Guild organized in 1869 by the ladies of the parish.

In 1959 a two story addition was added including a ground floor dining/meeting room and Church School rooms on the second floor.
