Who can attend?  All are welcome at St. Mary’s, regardless of background

What is the service like?  With few exceptions our weekend services are celebrations of the Eucharist, frequently referred to as the Mass, which consists of Bible readings, a sermon or homily, prayers, and Communion.  The 9:00 service on Sundays is sung, including musical settings of portions of the Mass, hymns, and choral anthems.

The worship at St. Mary’s is traditional in nature, using the more formal language of Rite I in the Book of Common Prayer.  Most of the worship service is included in a provided booklet, but for sung services we use the Hymnal as well.

How will I know what to do?  Worship at St. Mary’s, like other liturgical churches, involves the whole person:  spirit, mind, voice, and body.  We listen, we pray, we sing, and at various times we may sit, stand or kneel.  There are suggestions in the service bulletin, and a good rule of thumb is to watch what others do – and follow their examples as you may be comfortable.  Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly when it might be appropriate to bow, genuflect, or make the sign of the Cross!

May I receive Communion?  Baptized persons who recognize the Real Presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Eucharist are welcome to receive Communion.  The  consecrated bread may be received on the tongue or in the hand; you may receive the wine from the chalice, allow the chalice bearer to dip the host and place it on your tongue, or choose not to receive the wine.  In any case, you’re receiving the Body and Blood of Christ.

Where should I sit?  There is no reserved seating.  Some parishioners choose to sit in the same place week by week, while others vary.  If you see an open pew, you’re welcome to sit there.

How should I dress?  There’s no dress code!  Some choose to wear “Sunday best,” while others dress more casually.  Wear what makes you comfortable.
Are children welcome?  Children of all ages are welcome at any of our services.  If they’re not perfectly silent, that’s fine! – the sound of children is a beautiful addition to our gathered community.
